List by Madis Nestor

Days are getting shorter, and foliage is more colorful; Halloween is around the corner, and it’s time to dive deep into the darkness. Trickster asked DJ, melomaniac, and record store boss Madis Nestor for a proper Autumn soundtrack to add a touch of magic to everyday life, and he delivered!

Various - Black Rain - Smiling C

Now that global warming is an actual thing, the sky's still blue, and mid-day high temperatures are more common - how to get into the mood when autumn was still orange, red, and unpleasantly rainy? Well, there’s a fix for that, and it’s music. I’ve tried listening to Black Rain compilation by Charles Bals on sunny days, and it gives me chills and shivers. These privately pressed folk troubadours (meaning that most of these recordings are unknown to many) know their pain too well, and they take you along with their trippy sadness.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Wild God - Bad Seed

Modern-day prince of darkness Nick Cave and his entourage The Bad Seeds have set the bar high for this year's best albums with their 18th album to date - Wild God. Still remarkably grim and murky as always with their output, but this time being more celestial, using gospel choir backing from the mysterious Double R Collective. Feels like Nick is the man on the street corner on top of the wooden pedestal, howling his grief and anger, and you, as the other spectators, wait patiently until he finishes to applaud and praise the greatness that everyone just experienced.

Tristwch y Fenywod - Tristwch y Fenywo - Night School Records

Deep in the forest, a ritual occurs, where unsettled witches have summoned a gathering to insist that their voices be heard. Whether it’s about the blood to be spilled or the spirits to be awakened, they are soundtracked by this debut effort by a trio from Leeds - Tristwch y Fenywood. The Welsh singing vixen and her double zither-playing compatriot will make goth sexy again with eerie sounds that are impossible to match. Maybe only when you think that spooky horror movies are the most romantic flicks the world has to offer.

Holy Tongue / Shackleton - The Tumbling Psychic Joy of Now - AD 93

A partnership that brings together two similar artists from the resembling sound orbit can be a duel about whose sound is greater, but not in this case, as Holy Tongue ja Shackleton tribalistic spaced-out take on dub music melts together perfectly. And it is very autumn. I think I would prefer to listen through this at a big club environment, as all these varying drum patterns, echoes, and delays need a misty and standing-still atmosphere, and you can’t really have that while in transit from A to B.

Toro Y Moi - Hole Erth - Dead Oceans

Since the days when chillwave patron Chaz Bear released his first album, he has been one artist who habitually reinvents himself over and over. I’ve had a love-and-hate relationship with him while on this journey, but with Hole Erth I feel we are back together again. As much as I'm surprised to enjoy this emo-trap-punk piece, you will be amazed at how approachable it is. You don’t need to be a teenager with gloomy thoughts about how boring day-to-day life is with all the responsibility and identifying who you wanna be to empathize with Chaz is presenting.
